Protecting Your Braces

Posted .

At our orthodontic office, Dr. Montoya and our team want to impress upon you and your family the importance of orthodontics in maintaining a healthy smile that is well aligned. Since your braces are imperative to your orthodontic results, it’s important to keep them in good shape with these tips:

— Reduce your risk of damaging your braces, such as the brackets, archwires and orthodontic bands, by avoiding foods that are hard, sticky, chewy or crunchy, including caramel, bubblegum, ice, nuts and popcorn.

— If you enjoy eating sugary treats, you will need to maintain thorough dental habits of brushing and flossing your teeth every day. Exercise care when brushing around your brackets and wires, ensuring that the areas where the gums and teeth meet and where the braces make contact with your teeth receive proper attention.

— To protect your oral health and your braces, stick with treats and foods that are soft and can easily be easily cleaned away so that they don’t linger on your teeth and contribute to tooth decay.

— If you are involved in sports, we encourage you to look into wearing a sports mouth guard to protect your orthodontic appliances, as well as your lips and cheeks, from becoming damaged by a fall or blow to the face.
