Orthodontic Education
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive an initial orthodontic screening by age 7. Your family dentist may refer you to an orthodontist prior to that time if there is an obvious problem with the growth and development of your child’s teeth and jaws. Most children will not require anything more than observation to monitor changes in their mouth while their permanent teeth are beginning to emerge. However, many children have dental problems for which treatment should not be postponed. Most orthodontic problems are inherited and cannot be prevented, but when treated early they can be easily managed, and more difficult and expensive treatments later in life can be avoided.
We recommend that you consult with an orthodontist before having your family dentist remove any primary (baby) or permanent teeth. We also recommend that all children receive an orthodontic consultation between ages 4 and 7 to ensure the best overall dental and facial development.
